1. Financial donations which are extremely important and range from the large corporations which sponsor groups of learners to individuals who sponsor or share the sponsoring of individual learners.
2. A number of sponsors are committed to ensuring our annual dinner takes place successfully by supplying the venue and providing the catering. Others sponsor the liquid refreshments enjoyed during the course of the evening.
3. There are sponsors who donate their services and expertise in designing and arranging the decor for the evening.
4. Yet others donate a range of items to be auctioned on the evening.
5. A donor has provided all the learners from grades 9 to 12 with memberships of The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA). These learners will
all be involved in community environmental programmes run by WESSA.
6. A donation has been made toward assisting the trust in promoting career coaching and counselling with our learners.
7. Young professionals regularly volunteer their time to speak to our learners and act as role models.
8. There have been regular donations of clothing and musical instruments which have gone a long way to helping the learners. This generosity and continued support is much appreciated.

There are many others who donate willingly in so many other ways as well. Every donation is hugely appreciated and does help to make the efforts of creating educational opportunities for our trust learners so much more worthwhile

What we are asking you…… well every year we do an auction to raise funds for our charity so with your help we can send another bright child to a good school. We are approaching the service industry within Cape Town for donations of a service or goods that you supply. We will then auction these donations and100% of the money raised will go to educate Western Cape underprivileged learners. We have identified that people living in CT like to buy a “pamper gift” for themselves, a friend or family member from a reputable establishment and so we thought of approaching your business. We also sometimes try to combine some items in a package for example a weekend’s accommodation with a massage and dinner etc which then helps to up sell all the items within the package and people feel they are getting a special experience.

Why help us?………… what better way to get a new face into your fantastic facilities than donating one of your services for 1 or 2 or more people to our auction. You then have a new extended target market of 200 upper class people (number invitees to the auction) who get to hear about your fantastic facilities. You also have 1 or 2 or more people who will get to try your facilities and recommend you to their friends!!!!! (we ask that any donation has an expiry date of a year from the Auction night being 10 November 2011) and make the offer subject to availability. Ghowa has secured a bursary from the Leisure Hotel Group to attend the Hotel School of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Charney a one-­year bursary for studies at the University of Cape Town from an anonymous donor. She is doing a BA degree with the view of moving to the law faculty in her second year.

The success of an education trust is reliant on the performance of its learners, proper administration and the generosity of its donor support base. It is encouraging to see how many of the learners of the trust are doing so well academically. The administrative and personal support provided for the learners in the trust continues to be sound, although funding has dropped some 20%.

It was decided at the last trustees meeting that given the present economic climate and current financial constraints, the trust will not commit to more learners for next year, rather making sure it has the financial wherewith to support its current group of learners through the years to come.

Community Service:

The policy of encouraging each of the learners in the trust to do 40 hours of community service is beginning to bear fruit. The learners have become aware of those organisations that work in their communities and who need their volunteer support and assistance.

Many high school learners are faced with having to make subject selections without having the necessary information to hand regarding career choice and tertiary studies.

This year we are focusing on providing our Grade 9′s with career coaching. Group sessions and individual coaching sessions are taking place with learners during the December and April school holidays. They are encouraged to visit and interrogate their individual career choices and decide what their interests and options are, based on their specific personalities, needs and future dreams. They are encouraged to take a personal journey and to identify which career choices would best match who they are as an individual as well as their direct interest. It will also enable them to make sound subject choices. This is a trial programme and we would like to roll it out to all the trust learners going forwards.

In this job you require a lot of patience, you need to be a people person and to be able to deal with all sorts of problems. I think I have all these skills and would be very happy in this job.”

Nicolene (grade 9) “I would like to be an operating theatre practitioner. The job of these people is to assist the surgeon in theatre. They work in different types of theatres: urology, neurology, orthropedix,C sections, plastics /reconstructive surgery. The course lasts for two years.

Wesley (grade 9) “I want to go into the science and mathematics field at university. I would like to become a marine biologist, ecologist or a geologist. I want to help make a difference, that I can contribute to saving the world. The reason I want to become a biologist, ecologist or a geologist is because I love nature.”
